Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1960, James "Jimmy" Smith demonstrated an early talent for drawing that gained him significant recognition in his high school years. His artistic abilities earned him a prestigious scholarship to attend the Jamaica School of Arts, one of the most esteemed institutions in the country. Following his migration to Florida in the late 1970s, Jimmy continued his education, studying at the Art Institute of South Florida. In the early 1980s, he further honed his skills by attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City.

Since the 1980s, Jimmy has been actively involved in the competitive fields of art and fashion design, continuously refining his craft. Over the past decade, his work has garnered widespread recognition. Notably, in the July 10, 2013 edition of The Bronx Free Press, Jimmy was celebrated as a "Renaissance Man" for his multifaceted artistic contributions. His work on a landmarked building, recognized by the City in 1992, highlights his versatility as an artist and restorer. During the restoration, he masterfully managed the interior design, restored antique furniture, rejuvenated classic paintings, and introduced fresh, original artwork. This building, now a thriving bed and breakfast, also serves as an art exhibition space, where several of Jimmy’s pieces are proudly displayed.

Currently residing in the Bronx, NY, one of Jimmy's most cherished accomplishments is his role as an art instructor. Since 2011, he has shared his passion by teaching art to diverse groups of students, ranging in age, background, and skill level. His classes have had a profound impact, with many students sharing how his instruction helped them navigate personal challenges and lifted their spirits. For Jimmy, this feedback has been both humbling and motivating, affirming his belief in the transformative power of art. His dedication to teaching and helping others through creative expression continues to drive his mission of bringing art into the lives of as many people as possible.
